Job Description

Radio Flyer Inc. is seeking a skilled CNC Specialist located in Chicago, IL with experience in SurfCAM and SOLIDWORKS. This person will play a key role in the Product Development Prototype Shop located at the company’s headquarters on the northwest side of Chicago. The Model Maker-CNC Specialist works closely with Designers and Engineers to create rough mock-ups, functional prototypes, and finished (presentation quality) prototypes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead CNC programming and machining in the prototype shop.
  • Create detailed visual and functional prototypes for customer meetings.
  • Create prototypes using a variety of materials including foam, wood, plastic, metal, and composites.
  • Collaborate with Designers and Engineers to brainstorm solutions to design problems.
  • Innovation and creativity to push the boundaries of creating prototypes that are “closer to the real thing.”
  • Develop prototypes of different levels of finish throughout the entire product development process (rough mock-ups, form studies, and ergonomic testing prototypes.)
  • Operate and maintain CNC machining centers, router, and cutting tools
  • Order and manage material inventory
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized shop environment.
  • Package and ship prototypes to ensure safe delivery and return to multiple customers.

Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree (preferred) with a concentration in Prototype Design, Prototype Engineering, Industrial Design, Model Making, or Fine Arts.
  • 3+ years of experience in Model Making/Prototyping.
  • Fabrication experience using a variety of materials, tools, and techniques.
  • Ability to visualize 3-dimensional parts from mechanical drawings, hand sketches, or CAD models.
  • CNC programming and machining, experience with SurfCAM and SOLIDWORKS
  • CNC experience in a prototyping environment, machining ABS, various foam materials, and wood
