We currently have an excellent opportunity for a Sr Mechanical Design Engineer (Thermostats) to join our organization in Itasca, IL, USA.

Role Purpose:

Key in creating new concepts and developments and supporting the current product line for refrigeration controls for residential and commercial appliances, particularly electro-mechanical temperature controls and timers. It also provides mechanical and technical proficiency support for existing products. May act in a project and technical lead capacity on products/ projects of varying size, complexity, and risk. It is accountable for developing technical and professional (customer-facing) capabilities.



  • Crafts detailed mechanical designs and personally develops and/or oversees the development of prototype models by third-party vendors
  • Problem-solve using creative solutions to existing temperature controls in VA/VE exercises
  • Supports existing product lines
  • Works closely with project team members involved in other engineering disciplines (e.g., Electronic Design Engineering) to ensure compatibility of design
  • Leads design verification; reviews design with internal team and/or customers and ensures customer and internal requirements have been met
  • Recommends design modifications to existing products to enhance performance, add desired functionality/features, reduce cost, etc.
  • Oversees and is responsible for ensuring product validation; may write test requirements and conduct testing, as necessary
  • Works with third-party suppliers to gather production tooling cost estimates; qualifies that final production tooling meet requirements
  • Works with internal Agency Engineers or external certifying body representatives to ensure product design is in compliance with necessary safety requirements
  • Investigates product failures and makes recommendations to address issues
  • Confers with manufacturing personnel during design to ensure the design can be easily manufactured and assembled and works with manufacturing personnel to address part shortages, material replacements, design variations, etc.
  • Develops and adheres to time schedules that are in line with the master project plan; identifies risk factors (e.g., product design, timeline, cost) and makes project team members (e.g., other Engineers, Project Manager, Product Manager) aware of possible challenges and potential solutions
  • Controls the scope of work, ensuring that customer requests that exceed the defined requirements are handled appropriately and raised to appropriate decision-makers, as needed
  • Develops and applies best practices in mechanical design engineering techniques, processes, and policies
  • Serves as a mentor to other engineers, providing them opportunities to develop technical skills and customer relationship competence



  • BS, Mechanical Engineering
  • 3-7 years of experience in all stages of the product design lifecycle
  • Knowledge and understanding of mechanical temperature control devices with capillary bulbs desired
  • Solid understanding of engineering mechanics, fluid flow, and pneumatics.
  • Relevant industry experience highly preferred (e.g., appliance, HVAC, automotive, commercial refrigeration)
  • Experience reading, analyzing, and interpreting agency regulations and product safety standards
  • 3D/CAD Solid Modeling – CREO
  • Product evaluation, testing and reporting skills
  • Knowledge of Statistical Techniques (Ex. Design of Experiments, Product Capability Analysis, Tolerance, and Dimensional Stack-ups)
  • Experience with FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances (GD&T)
  • Exhibit excellent creativity and innovation in design work while keeping project goals in mind
