Monsanto is seeking a talented individual to become an integral member of our Global Research & Development team as a Project Engineer. Monsanto’s Global Technology Organization (R&D) is a multi-functional, multi-crop organization comprised of five broad areas: Biotechnology, Breeding, Breeding Technology, Regulatory and Chemistry. These areas collaborate to create the products in our R&D pipeline, which has a proven track record of creating products that are proprietary, first to market, and profitable. Engineers in the Smart Fields Automation Engineering team within Monsanto’s Biotechnology organization are responsible for developing a wide variety of automated systems. The systems range from stand alone bench top to large scale automated/robotic machines and automated agricultural field equipment.

The Project Engineer will primarily be a project lead capable of leading a multi-disciplined design team throughout the project lifecycle from concept proposal through detailed design, fabrication, testing, installation, and field support. The position requires expertise in key areas such as: people leadership, project planning, risk analysis, technical utilization, project execution, automated equipment development and production/manufacturing knowledge. Design background utilizing industry standards is critical for our ongoing production reliability, safety, and electrical/electronic systems performance. The Project Engineer is expected to take a significant hands-on role in the mechanical and mechanical design, development, and documentation of Monsanto’s systems. The mechanical / mechanical design aspects may include: conventional machining, 3D printing, design for manufacturability, materials considerations, pneumatics, electro-mechanical subsystems, mechanisms, robotics, sensing solutions, and vision.

Responsibilities include:

• Designing and developing automated machines and systems for laboratory, production and agricultural field environments
• Project management including planning, status reports, information/data analysis and presentation of research results
• Participating in our proposal development process to include estimating engineering and leadership workflow and schedule design
• Leading a multi-disciplined project design team throughout the project lifecycle
• Leading detailed design execution and supporting field construction activities, check-out, commissioning and startup
• Working with colleagues to develop documentation of functional requirements
• Preparing proposals via cross-functional matrix relationships with colleagues
• Researching existing methods and proposing new approaches that add value to the product pipeline
• Independently researching new technologies and recommending technical innovation in machine/system architecture, control methodologies and industrial/lab automation
• Evaluating mechanical systems, products, components, and applications
• Designing and documenting mechanical, mechanical systems, and electro-mechanical systems
• Creating part and assembly drawings
• Creating documents such as work/user instructions, functional specifications, detailed design, and specifications
• Applying principals of Systems Engineering, industry design procedures, safety standards and project management to workflow design and execution

Required Education and Skills/Experience:

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field
• Minimum of five or more years of relevant Engineering experience
• Proven track record of successful project management across functions
• Experience with design and delivery of automated systems
• Experience with design of mechanical systems
• Experience with computer/ PLC control of complex automated systems
• Innovative with analytical problem solving abilities
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Experience using 3D CAD or similar software
• Experience using standard office productivity software including Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Desired Education and Skills/Experience:

• Experience using SolidWorks and/or Enterprise PDM
• Experience with assembly structure optimization
• Experience with Bill of Materials management for repeat builds
• Experience with revision control of mechanical designs
• Experience with conventional manufacturing techniques, including machining, sheet metal, and welding
• Experience with 3D printing
• Experience with design for manufacturability
• Experience with pneumatics and hydraulics
• Experience and familiarity with integrated vision systems
• Experience with non-vision sensing solutions, including but not limited to mechanical, optical, laser, and hall effect
• Experience with design and integration of safety systems
• Familiarity with electrical control systems and integration
• Strong mechanical aptitude
