Job Description

The Product Development Engineer leads the development on products for new and existing floorcare product lines.  In this key role, he/she will lead the PD&E activities to ensure that BISSELL requirements are met with a resulting of successful product launches.  This person will have a heavy emphasis in technical expertise while having the ability to create and manage a project schedule, maintain and strengthen supplier relationships, and be a critical link in technical communications both within BISSELL and with outside suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Direction and overall responsibility for the technical aspects of the product and project.
  • Design plastic parts for injection molding.
  • Integration of electronic and electromechanical components
  • Specify and select purchased components.
  • Development of comprehensive test plans.
  • Set clear and thorough part, material, and overall product specifications.
  • Technical definition of product and feasibility studies
  • Analysis of test results and the understanding of performance.
  • Coaching, mentoring and possible supervision of junior engineers, designers, and co-ops.
  • Provide technical information about the project to others in the company.
  • Recommend and participate in the improvement of methods, equipment, staffing.
  • Responsible for the completeness, correctness and accuracy of CAD data
  • Estimate technical project resources requirements and project expenses
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned

  • Interaction with global engineering teams, Industrial Design, CAD, Marketing, Consumer Experience, Buyers, Operations, Test Lab, etc

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION  

Degree minimum:  Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering

Specific concentration: 

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Strength in engineering fundamentals
  • Analytical approach to problems
  • Ability to understand voice of consumer needs and integrate these into product specs
  • Basic personal computer skills
  • Electromechanical consumer products
  • UL approved products
  • Test development and results analysis
  • Project scheduling and tracking
  • Plastic part design
  • Team environment

Experience level:  5+ years of experience in product development

 

SPECIALIZED TRAINING/EDUCATION PREFERRED 

  • 3D CAD and geometric dimensioning using CREO
  • Exposure to finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
  • Fluid or air-moving products
  • Design for Assembly Analysis (DFA)
  • Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA, DFMEA)
  • Project management
  • Design of Experiments (DoE, Taguchi)
  • Reading and comprehension of utility patents
  • Supervisory experience

SKILLS REQUIRED
