Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Product Designer II is responsible for designing new or modified products according to established engineering specifications. Additional duties include generating engineering drawings for use by manufacturing or established vendors, providing support to manufacturing, and facilitating the Engineering Change Request/Notification process. Opportunities exist to specialize in specific product applications with highly technical requirements.

Must be able to work in a team-based, fast-paced technical environment with a focus on innovation and creativity to meet evolving customer needs for custom designs, enhancements, and modifications.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Review design goals and specifications to develop working layouts and perform mathematical computations needed for product design. Create design studies, tolerance stack-ups, layouts, drawings, calculations, weight estimates, supporting documentation, etc., as needed to establish acceptable standards of performance, material selection, and type of construction.
  • Check design work of layouts, including form, fit, function, materials, specification callouts, geometrics, dimensioning, and other information as directed. Revise the size, shape, and arrangement of parts to create manufacturing drawings.
  • Consider DFM & ASI manufacturing capabilities in all design projects and identify new or external manufacturing processes or sources needed to complete projects.
  • Manage the Engineering Change Request/Notice (ECR/ECN) process for new and existing product design changes, including drawing updates, documentation, and ERP implementation.
  • Supervise and assist in the construction and testing of prototypes.
  • Work with Product Engineers, Manufacturing, Quality, and Service Departments to define problem areas and implement product improvements
  • Assist with the investigation and analysis of capital expenditure projects for manufacturing
  • Implement and maintain ERP data including Item Masters, BOM’s, & Routings
  • Provide manufacturing support and investigate root causes to clearly identify opportunities for improvements
  • Help with managing nonconforming material dispositions to drive to root-cause solutions
  • Assist with identifying and implementing existing product redesigns and enhancements to meet customer needs
  • Proactively support new product development, and contribute to the design, process, and technology required from prototype to commercialization
  • Produce new and make modifications to existing product owners and technical bulletins, etc., for all product lines as needed.
  • Travel as needed to gather prototype field test data or support Sales and Field Service when necessary.
  • Mentor less experienced Designers and Drafters.

Required Skills/Competencies

  • Good internal communication skills and a collaborative teamwork approach

  • Knowledge of ERP Systems –item masters, BOM’s, and routings
  • Skilled in the use of computer-aided design software AutoCAD & SOLIDWORKS
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite of software
  • Use of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and other principles to decrease the cost and complexity of manufacturing
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering documents.
  • Ability to communicate via nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,).
  • Experience in sheet metal fabrication design, including flat development, weldments, and stamping required. Some experience in plastics is preferred.

Education and/or Experience

Associate Degree (A.A.) from a two-year college or technical school.  Five or more years of related experience and or/training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Experience in a low volume/high mix manufacturing environment desired.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as engineering drawings, schedules, and routings. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should know Engineering design (CAD) software (AutoCAD & SOLIDWORKS preferred); ERP systems; Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.
