The R&D PD Engineer is charged with researching, developing, designing, and fabricating new products in the automotive and consumer products spaces, instrumentation, and related technology to meet current and future corporate needs. The candidate must have a strong desire to design and prototype small, precision parts.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning and executing the R&D projects assigned by the supervisor and the timely completion of incoming development requests, which include design, fabrication, and testing of prototypes, as well as completing engineering change notices. Some CNC machining of prototypes as a method of fabrication may be required, and you will be trained on the job.
  • Product responsibility includes Specialty Products, Automotive, and Marketing as needed.
  • Maintain a high degree of knowledge and awareness in the relevant fluid mechanics technology area and share the knowledge with others in the group.
  • Willing to learn plastic part design at a detailed level, including basics of tool construction.
  • Responsible for the technical organization of the assigned projects to ensure that experiments are properly designed, planned, and conducted, while ensuring that each project has proper documentation for reproducibility and legal/patenting purposes.
  • Responsible for organizing and analyzing experimental data, interpreting and presenting the results professionally.
  • Responsible for active communication with and continual reporting to the supervisor.
  • Responsible for keeping the R&D office and lab areas in a tidy and organized manner.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to reduce-to-practice designs from concept or brainstorms.
  • Proven experience with fluid dynamic principles.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing technology, like precision injection molding and high­ speed assembly.
  • Strong awareness of measurement techniques and part inspection methods in a lab environment.
  • Design of experimental methods, tools, and laboratory fixtures.
  • Work with internal and customer engineering teams in a professional manner.
  • Delivering comprehensive engineering reports with little oversight. Software experience: PTC Creo or Pro/E desired
  • Strong command of MS Excel data analysis and reporting. Test and simulation software a plus.
  • Diverse fabrication hobbies such as fine woodworking (not construction), auto mechanics (gearhead), puzzle or model builder, tinker etc.

Experience: Experience in CAD and product design are required. A demonstrable history of precision fabrication of small parts is required. Competence in product development processes, CNC machining, and fluid flow systems are all strongly desired. Candidate ideally has an ability to manage sub-tasks requiring FEA analysis. Ideal candidate will have exceptional organizational skills, be able to work independently as well as within a multi-disciplinary team. Excellent communication and presentation skills are also beneficial. Proven experience in leading development projects in workplace or school.

Physical Demands: Must be able to work with small parts using a microscope on some occasions. Must be able to work around various chemicals commonly found in automotive applications and machine shops, and in a safe lab environment, able to lift 35 lbs.
