Job Description

The Opto-Mechanical Engineer is responsible for developing, analyzing, and validating lens designs and prototypes. The ideal candidate must be comfortable with both theoretical modelling and empirical evaluation, and be able to be hands-on with camera and lens equipment. They should be able to take a product concept or bench prototype and develop it into a manufacturable design.

The candidate will have some optical and deep opto-mechanical / mechanical engineering expertise. They will work closely with Engineering, Special Optics, Manufacturing, Service, and Product Management departments.

Key Responsibilities:

•    Generate a design from concept to production
•    Define the specifications for the design
•    Coordinate prototype development
•    Define test requirements for the product
•    Assess manufacturability of the design
•    Oversee product management of design documentation
•    Develop and test new design concepts
•    Interface with manufacturing to facilitate production through initial run
•    Coordinate production and release documentation
•    Determine feasibility for product development

Skills/Experience Required:

•    BS or higher in mechanical engineering or related area
•    5-7 years professional mechanical design experience
•    Competence reading and generating optical fabrication prints
•    Expertise in machining practice for precision parts and assembly
•    Proficiency using solid modeling software such as Creo or Solidworks
•    Experience taking a product from concept to production
•    Ability to read and translate optical prescriptions
•    Proficiency with PDM software i.e. Windchill
•    Familiarity with lens design and practices
•    Familiarity with photographic lenses and basic concepts
•    Experience with geometric optics for photography a plus
•    Competency developing test procedures and documentation
•    Well organized, independent, able to multi-task and shift priorities as needed
•    Proficiency with Office software especially Excel. MatLab or similar software a plus
•    Strong analytical and technical skills
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•    Strong problem-solving skills
•    Comfortable working in a fast-paced, changing environment

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

This job operates in a professional office environment.  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and reach with hands and arms.  The employee may also be required to lift product or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Prompt and regular attendance is required, employees are expected to begin work at the start of their scheduled shift and to complete their assigned work shift according to the responsibilities of their position.

This position works standard business hours, but may require long hours and some weekend work.


Some out-of-state/country and overnight travel may be expected.
