Job Description

Title:                      Mechanical Design Engineer – DMG MORI Additive Solutions Research and Development

Reports to:         Head of Research and Development 

Location:             3601 Faraday Avenue, Davis, CA 95618

Hours:                  Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm

Classification:    Exempt

Travel:                 15%

Employment is conditioned on DMG MORI’s ability to obtain and maintain any necessary export licensing.

The Mechanical Design Engineer will work on designing, testing, and prototyping new innovations for industrial machine tools in the field of additive manufacturing (AM). The role will focus on designing unique components and systems for AM, including CAD modeling, testing, and development of cost-effective manufacturing solutions. The ideal candidate will have experience in mechanical design, a strong understanding of fabrication processes, and a solid grasp of additive manufacturing principles. This role will require creating Creo and subsequent detailed drawings, test plans, and test benches, along with a comprehensive understanding of additive manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities include up to and not limited to: Perform development engineering work under direct supervision.

  • Research, design, development, and testing of equipment for AM (additive manufacturing).
  • Design and development of innovative solutions for powder conveyance, optical calibration, laser control, and gas flow.
  • Conduct time estimates for components to understand the impact of product innovations.
  • Calculate optimal machine parameters for part processing.
  • Apply statistical process control and machine reliability analysis.
  • Inspect finished parts for quality and accuracy.
  • Generate engineering reports and technical documentation.
  • Frequent communication with internal technical staff, external customers, and suppliers.
  • Experience in product development, including Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Create CAD models, drawing files, and develop test plans and test benches to validate designs.
  • Ensure designs are manufacturable and cost-effective through collaboration with manufacturing teams.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited university
  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience in mechanical design, particularly with a focus on mechanism design.
  • Proficient in parametric Creo and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management).
  • Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis), GD&T Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and other simulation and analysis tools.
  • Experience with part processing, metal cutting, CNC programming, and machine setup.
  • Basic understanding of metallurgy.
  • Experience in additive manufacturing (AM) is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven flexibility in managing shifting priorities and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Work Environment

Exposure to manufacturing/machining environments which may present possible hazards such as noise, electricity, chemicals, heavy equipment, and other automated and manual machinery.  General office environment experienced at DMG MORI office.

Physical Demands:

Frequent: Travel, operating a vehicle, standing, walking, bending, squatting, stooping, sitting, and reaching. Pushing, pulling, and lifting objects. Repetitive foot, leg, hand, arm, shoulder, and torso movements.

Periodic: Operating power equipment, sitting at a desk, utilizing computers and phones.

Occasional: Lifting or moving up to 50lbs.
