Here at Hidrate we design and develop Bluetooth enabled smart water bottles that automatically track your water intake, sync to a personalized hydration app, and glow to remind you to stay healthy and hydrated.

Hidrate was established in 2014 by a founding team of recent University of Minnesota graduates. The team successfully flew through startup events, accelerators and crowdfunding that helped catapult the HidrateSpark water bottle line into the beverageware and health awareness markets, with placement in large retailers like Target, Apple Stores and online at Amazon.com.

Our team currently consists of roughly 20 full-time employees with 2 main office locations in Minneapolis and Chicago, while most of the manufacturing for the physical product is being done in China.

Job description

The Product Development Engineer will be part of an integral and fast-paced engineering team responsible for the delivery of cradle-to-grave new product development (NPD) and continuous product improvement efforts.

  • Lead product design and project management efforts in the engineering of new product from ideation through launch following best practice stage/gate NPD processes.
  • Brainstorm, research, ideate, develop, and deliver cutting edge product that meets or exceed cost, timing, function, and quality expectations.
  • Work hand-in-hand with cross-functional groups and manage key communications with overseas Hidrate teams and contract manufacturers.

Responsibilities

  • Review and advise cross-functional teams on project proposals, briefs, and product pipelines as they relate to cost, timelines, design, manufacturing, and technical feasibility.
  • Brainstorm, investigate, create proof of concepts, prototype, and validate new design considerations, technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into straightforward, clear, language for cross-functional audiences.
  • Identify, examine, and benchmark competitive products, and new and related industry standards.
  • Develop top-down product cost estimates, construct RFQ packages, and create and maintain bill of material (BOM) documentation.
  • Design and develop complex DFM/DFA product components and assemblies often for PCB and electronics integration using best practices in master/skeleton 3D CAD modeling (Solidworks preferred) for a multitude of thermoplastic, thermoset, and metal forming manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in technical design reviews with senior engineering oversight to ensure products are correctly designed to specification, functional, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Create tolerance loops, component stack-ups, and 2D control drawings where needed.
  • Assist contract manufacturers in design, material, and process optimization before tooling kick-off.
  • Develop and perform in-depth pre-production test criteria and testing for product validation. Assist in the creation of QAP, FDM, and IPQC documentation.
  • Analyze pre-production test results and enact time-sensitive resolution and mitigation plans. Deliver engineering approval on-time and on-quality.
  • Manage daily communication with contract manufacture contacts and overseas Hidrate team members. Host and participate in weekly overseas calls and project update meetings.
  • Perform tasks, testing, cost exercises, and technical explorations at senior engineering or cross-functional request.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Plastics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5-7 years of consumer product design and development, project management. DFM and DFA experience is required.
  • Demonstrates high proficiency in 3D visuospatial-rotational conceptualization, problem solving, critical thinking, and has strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated expert proficiency in 3D CAD surface and solid modeling (SolidWorks preferred) and familiarity with G3 surface continuity control.
  • In-depth comprehension of plastic part design, tooling, processing, and material selection. A close familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of injection molding, blow molding, ISBM, extrusion molding, and plastic joining processes. Knowledge on hydroforming, deep-draw, or die-casting a plus.
  • Experience with electronics and PCB integration into mechanical design.
  • Experience with sketching, digital tools, and hands-on model making.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, a team player with a positive attitude to achieve personal, professional, and team goals.
  • Experience with SolidWorks Simulation (FEA) and MoldFlow is a plus. Beverage or drinkware experience is a plus.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
