Integrated Logistics

The Logistics team provides end-to-end integrated logistics solutions designed, deployed, and executed to support Caterpillar’s global footprint of manufacturing plants, suppliers, distribution centers, and dealers. Capabilities include:

  • Packaging Design and Returnable Container Management
  • Inbound International and Domestic Transportation
  • Logistics Network Operations – including Manufacturing Parts Nodes, Site Logistics, and Cross Dock Operations
  • Outbound Logistics – International and Domestic: Specialized Cargo and Product Distribution Solutions

As a Packaging Engineer, you will design and develop returnable and expendable packaging for individual piece parts and bulk shipping to ensure the timely and efficient receipt and delivery of material. Proper packaging design includes part containment, protection, and optimization of transportation and other supply chain functions. This position will focus on the delivery of large pallets and crates of material to remote locations around the world.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Thorough knowledge of shipping guidelines, quality, and inventory warehousing standards.
  • Prior automotive packaging engineering experience
  • Establish packaging and processing specifications at the part number level for new product introductions, cost savings, or other supply chain improvement
  • Collaborate with all support groups including but not limited to supply chain, operations, quality, purchasing, and engineering
  • Lead packaging projects focused on cost reduction for inbound and outbound
  • Lead validation of packaging developed for NPI
  • Communicate with existing facilities on packaging issues related to receiving, warehousing, and/or line-side delivery
  • Perform cost analysis on current packaging processes and recommend changes where appropriate
  • Lead low-risk Green Belt projects
  • Perform activities to ensure parts are protected, shipped, and delivered to the customer in a usable fashion
  • Develop packaging solutions to protect finished painted components
  • Design for transport efficiency
  • Perform containerization analysis, testing, and quoting
  • Validate new packaging and containers during the pilot phase
  • Resolve safety and/or quality issues caused by current packaging
  • Resolve issues reported by customers and process partners
  • Develop, communicate and maintain supplier packaging requirements
  • Audit conformance to packaging specification
  • Joint Process Improvement with packaging vendors and purchasing
  • Create packaging concepts using 3D modeling software (i.e. Creo, CAD, SOLIDWORKS, or other similar 3D electronic drafting experience)

Additional Information

  • This position does not offer relocation
  • This position requires 5% or less travel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Packaging, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Manufacturing Engineering OR Engineering Technology
  • 2+ years of Design Engineer, Logistics Engineer, Packaging Engineer, Supply Chain Planning Engineer, and/or Manufacturing Engineer experience
  • 1+ years of experience with heavy/industrial packaging
  • Basic design experience utilizing 3D CAD Software i.e. Creo or SOLIDWORKS packaging modeling experience
  • Additional packaging design experience in the automotive or similar industry

  • Demonstrated ability in leading and managing complex projects
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, organization, and communication skills
  • Documented experience working within operations that demonstrate knowledge of material handling equipment and line requirements
  • Familiar with company policies and procedures with a strong department background
  • Greenbelt certified
  • CPS knowledge
  • PMP certification
