Job Description

The CAD Designer follows the quality production processes and works together in a team constructing specialized tooling for foundries, aerospace and various industries. This includes patterns, molds, and fixtures made of wood/foam/metal/plastic components.

The CAD designer works with customers and internal team members to prepare 3D models and internal work orders for the production team. The main role is to construct and ensure that tooling is made according to customer requirements, blueprint specifications, and APW standards.

All contributions of the CAD designer is set to the highest of quality and standard representing at all times, but also maintaining the high-performance image of Advanced Pattern Works in a positive manner. The employee shall demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues, customers and management staff and works well under pressure meeting multiple deadlines.


CAD Design

  • Utilize SolidWorks to modify & create 3D models for Mastercam. Coordinate customer requirements and production methods to design tooling, 3D models, and internal work orders.
  • Interpret blueprints, solid models, and specifications as well as verify job-specific dimensions of tooling.
  • Inspect customer provided models and drawings for accuracy. Communicate with customers as needed to design tooling.
  • Facilitate design and job reviews.
  • Complete special projects and duties as assigned.
  • Inspect finished tooling to blueprint specifications using templates and measuring instruments.
  • Construct templates for layout and inspection.

Shop duties – (occasionally required; will provide training as needed)

  • General pattern shop work; material storage and tooling preparation. Able to work in a pattern-making environment involving dust, noise, and fumes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Capable to lift up to 75 lbs.


  • Must be a self-starter, able to work unsupervised and understand the importance of meeting deadlines to ensure timely project completion.
  • Attention to detail and organization; strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • A degree in Engineering AND/OR Minimum 2 years of CAD Design experience.
  • Experience/Proficient with SolidWorks, CAD, PRO-E, Fusion 360 or other Solid modeling applications.


  • Foundry Experience in manufacturing of sand castings OR Pattern Shop experience.
  • Familiar with ASI 9100 Certifications.


  • SOLIDWORKS or Pro E Software: 1 year (Preferred)
  • CAD Design: 2 years (Required)
