The Workstations division of HP (www.hp.com/workstations) is a high-performance, high-integrity, and fun organization looking for motivated and talented mechanical engineers with a passion for customers, quality and of course virtual reality (VR)!

This position is for a mechanical engineer with proven ME knowledge to solve complex technical issues.  The selected candidate will be part of an R&D team designing commercial VR platforms and solutions for HP customers. This position is in the Workstation Business Unit and would be responsible for designing and providing technical leadership for Commercial VR platforms.

This role will help design current and next generation innovative VR hardware.  Critical to the success of this position is building strong relationships with worldwide colleagues and key partners in TCE/Quality, Supply Chain, VR vendors (hardware), and ODM suppliers.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for and experience in VR technologies along with strong and proven technical leadership and design skills.

This position is managed and based in Fort Collins, CO.  The team is split between the US and Taipei, TWN.  Light travel to Asia is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs engineering solutions for mechanical and thermal hardware, electronics enclosures, and production tooling based on established engineering principles and in accordance with development technology practices and guidelines.
  • Develops and implements parameters and test plans for new and existing designs, including validation of tolerances, form/fit/function, shock and vibration, electromagnetic interference, safety, reliability, developing fan curves, system power measurements & acoustics.
  • Collaborates and communicates with management, internal, and outsourced development partners regarding design status, project progress, and issue resolution.
  • Designing sheet metal and plastic parts and associated production tooling and processes.
  • Using CFD and thermal mockups to validate thermal solution.
  • Evaluating and proposing forms of empirical analysis, modeling and testing methodologies to validate hardware designs and thermal/emissions management.
  • Drive innovation and integration of new technologies into projects and activities
  • Reviews and evaluates designs and project activities for compliance with technology and development guidelines and standards; provides tangible feedback to improve product quality
  • Collaborate with other HP business units or external partners to explore and realize leverage opportunities
  • Engagement with R&D technologists
  • Work cross-functionally with key partners to deliver product definition meeting cost, feature, quality and user experience goals
  • Routinely exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and criteria for achieving objectives

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 4+ years of professional engineering experience
  • Must have excellent communications skills, verbal and written
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in overall architecture of mobile hardware for products and solutions
  • Using Creo, Solidworks or other 3D CAD software as a mechanical design tool
  • Must be able to work well as part of a high-performance R&D team
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills in a large, diverse environment
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Experience managing issues of technical and logistic complexity
  • Experience achieving results through others – such as ODM partners and regional teams
  • Strong knowledge of mobile technologies and solutions
  • Proven ability to manage time effectively and lead multiple projects simultaneously across businesses
  • Experience in high tech commercial manufacturing
  • Strong troubleshooting/debugging skills
