The Specialty Components-Acoustics division of Knowles is the leading provider of microphones and receivers (speakers) for hearing instruments, high-end personal earphones, and ear-worn computing worldwide. The Research group of Knowles SC-A is responsible for developing the technologies to augment or even supplant the core technologies of MEMS microphones and balanced-armature receivers for improved product performance and assuring growth in this demanding, high-tech market space.

The goal of this project is to develop electroacoustic and vibromechanical models of balanced-armature receivers to assist our customers simulating hearing aid systems to optimize for acoustic output and minimize feedback due to vibration or acoustic leakage. The models are created in Mathematica by curve fitting a network model to measured performance data. The receiver models are distributed to our customers as Spice netlists, which can be imported into Modelica or COMSOL or left as an element in Spice around which the larger system can be built and simulated.


Obtain representative samples of several receiver models and acquire electroacoustic and vibration performance data.
Curve-fit network models to acquired data.
Suggest and implement improvements to the data acquisition system and curve fitting software (Mathematica)
Organize and structure the resulting models as a library for distribution to customers
Perform validation testing for the vibromechanical models and discuss with customer’s engineers.
Determine canter of mass and rotational inertial of receivers in Creo
Port core data-acquisition functions from Matlab to LabView and implement function calling between LabView and Mathematica.

Masters or higher in a technical field such as Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Acoustics
Classwork credit or laboratory experience with LabView and 3D drafting software such as Creo
Familiar with Lumped Parameter Modeling
Electro Acoustic Transducer and Spice Knowledge preferred
Ability to self-organize and possess detail orientation
Ability to learn varied software and programming platforms rapidly
Strong test and measurement skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
