Emulate creates living products for understanding how diseases, medicines, chemicals, and foods affect human health. Our founding team pioneered the original Organs-on-Chips technology during their time working within the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University. As a Mid-level Industrial Designer, you will propose design refinements and help translate prototypes into final products – working with our multi-disciplinary R&D, design, engineering and scientific teams. In conjunction with Emulate’s Design Lab, you will drive the design and development of the products from proof-of-concept to commercial, based on an agreed strategy and vision. This role is inherently design-focused—you will work to bring design-led, highly innovative biotech products to market. A successful candidate will be creative yet analytical, able to work extremely effectively across the organization, and adept at synthesizing a variety of functions and design ideas into high quality products that our partners and collaborators can readily use. A candidate must have a successful track record of designing innovative products in either the biomedical or high-tech markets.


Commence: Monday, November 9th, 2015
Duration: Initial 6-8 week contract (may extend or convert to permanent hire)
Reports to: VP Product Development

Key Responsibilities:

• Work closely with business, R&D, design, science, engineering and manufacturing teams to refine a product prototype into a packaged version, ready for deployment to academic and industry clients
• Work with the internal teams to understand use-case scenarios for the product – and ensure the product is designed in a manner appropriate to support end-user usability and product usage success
• Work daily alongside the teams to refine the prototype’s chassis and component design – to improve function and aesthetics, with considerations to impact on engineering, manufacturing and financial plans
• Work with the conceptual design team to explore new product design ideas and validate their feasibility with the engineering, science, manufacturing and product management teams
• Create, maintain and develop accurate CAD models and files ready for manufacturing process
• Provide regular updates to senior management in progress and status

Desired Skills & Experience:

• BFA in Industrial Design or related fields with 3+ years of experience designing and developing instrumentation or other products in a life sciences or high-tech product design role
• Ability to sketch concepts, and then produce detailed 3D CAD drawings with renders is essential
• Proficiency in SolidWorks is essential
• Ability to deep-dive into product design details yet maintain focus on functionality and usability
• Ability to communicate clearly with designers, engineers, scientists and business owners
• High attention to detail, including a proven ability to understand requirements quickly, as well as the ability to design appropriate solutions and execute CAD drawings very methodically
• A passion for developing user-focused products that will push the boundaries of innovation
