MDA US Systems, LLC, a division of MDA Canada and SS/L in Palo Alto, is an exciting and unique company which provides robotics, structures, mechanisms, and system engineering services for spacecraft and instruments. Uniquely equipped to provide a full range of design and manufacturing services, the Company performs end-to-end product development from conception through delivery. We are developing and building next-generation space automation capabilities for planetary exploration and on-orbit satellite servicing and repair. We are the only satellite manufacturer with the ability to build on robotics technologies proven on the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station and the Mars lander and rovers, and we partner with government agencies such as NASA and DARPA to develop robotics systems that will benefit both government and commercial organizations.
MDA US Systems is seeking exceptional Mechatronics Engineers for full time positions in our Pasadena, CA office. This office provides robotics, structures, mechanisms, and system engineering services for spacecraft and instruments from concept through delivery of flight hardware. Services include design, analysis, fabrication, assembly and test of products for space and other demanding applications. Key competencies include mechanical and electromechanical design, dynamic and stress analysis, machining, precision assembly, and test engineering.

Work is extremely varied but typically involves development of aerospace and terrestrial systems for NASA, DARPA, and commercial customers. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to play a leading role on projects with significant impact on the future of our industry.

REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for applicants that are highly qualified in several areas, have well rounded capabilities, and are interested in contributing to any number of tasks in a wide variety of roles – as opposed to specialists with a desire to work only specific areas. This requires someone who loves to learn new things and has a passion for space, mechanisms, electromechanical systems, and testing in general.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for the design, development, assembly, integration, and test of terrestrial and flight hardware systems
Technical expert for the delivery of electromechanical systems, subsystems, and products
Serves as a system engineer and member of hardware development and test team
Project, task, and test planning/reporting
Prepares and presents design reviews to management and customers
Supports writing proposals and marketing proposal pursuits
Documents design details, interfaces, test plans/procedures, and processes with an emphasis on good laboratory documentation and organization

Requirements:

Hands on project and hardware experience
Comfortable with electrical, mechanical, and structural systems
Familiarity with wide variety of actuators, gear trains, and mechanisms
Design and testing of electro-mechanical systems
Hands on experience with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, power analyzers, TDRs, etc…

Interest/experience in hardware development and testing including
○ EMI/EMC
○ Vibration and TVAC
○ BERT, Eye Diagrams
○ Motor and Dynamometer
Solidworks, Labview, and Matlab software packages
Experience with motors, resolvers, encoders, and potentiometers
Experience with round wire and flex harnessing
Familiarity with aerospace processes and flight projects
Familiarity with low volume, high precision manufacturing and assembly techniques
System engineering perspective (trades, requirements, resource budgets, multi-system interaction/integration, interface control documentation)

Labview certification
Real-time Labview Experience
Data acquisition
Signal conditioning (low signal levels in particular)
Power filtering, EMI/EMC, grounding and shielding
Basic circuit design and PCB design/fab
Motor drives, servo amplifiers
Networking, TCP/IP, UDP
Serial communications including RS422, CANbus, EtherCAT, 1553, and LVDS
Force torque sensors and various other sensors
Thermal systems design, analysis, and test
Understanding of bearings, lubrication, and life
Ability to generate mechanical drawings and understanding of GD&T
Hardware ruggedization and IP rating/certification

Work Schedule:
9/80 work week with every-other Friday off; some overtime and travel may be required.
