Mechanical Engineer III – Design Engineer

Specializing in leading-edge manned and unmanned aircraft control and landing systems, SNC’s Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management business area designs and develops surface and airborne radars, 3-dimensional imaging radars, manned and unmanned aircraft flight control systems, GPS navigation systems, support avionics, mobile Air Traffic Control shelters and related products. This business area is continuing to grow in support of its customers and seeks qualified and highly motivated individuals to join our team in Sparks, NV.

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design and development of complex airborne radar solutions as related to the structural mounting, electronics packaging, thermal management, and mechanical actuation. These design tasks may be self-directed while also requiring leadership amongst a team of multiple disciplines. Responsibilities include, part detailed design, assembly design, formal drawings, structural analysis, system thermal analysis, platform integration, vendor management, documentation preparation, analysis reporting, and customer interaction. Work is performed in a fast paced, highly collaborative environment with a focus on technology development.

Essential functions of the Mechanical Engineer

a) Understand, plan, and execute technical activities in accordance with SNC policies, procedures, and work instructions and specific Customer requirements.

b) Read, interpret and create technical drawings and schematics per ASME Y14.5 – 2009

c) Originate specifications, control documents, verification and validation plans, procedures, reports, or other documentation in support of design and development activities.

d) Prepare material for, and conduct, periodic design reviews.

e) Ensure conformance of products with Engineering design and performance specifications

f) Execute Engineering design and development activities consistent with Customer quality, cost, and schedule requirements.

Candidate must have the following experience or capabilities:

Capable of performing complex analysis using thermal and structural tools, FEMAP, CF Design, Star CCM, etc. At least 6 years of experience in the aerospace (or related) industry. Minimum of a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Willing to travel for the purposes of field testing and interaction with customers and subcontractors. Proficient in 3D CAD systems (Solidworks, Creo, Catia, etc) and configuration management practice. U.S. citizen or permanent resident and must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Candidates should have experience with most of the following:

Experience designing mechanical components for use on commercial airborne avionics systems and/or other defense electronics systems. Familiarity with multiple materials including, composite structures, machined components, and RF-transmissible radomes. Experience with ruggedized electronics packaging to meet temperature, moisture, and human interface requirements. Proficient in use of Microsoft Office and other computer-based tools to support engineering and briefing/proposal development activities.
