Job Description

Position Summary

This position’s primary responsibility is for the design and support of mechanical, electro-mechanical, and packaging components of proprietary OMR and image scanners, and associated paper stacking accessories. The support includes both supporting the manufacture of the document scanners and stackers, and supporting customers and field technicians including participating in problem analysis meetings. Additionally, this position will be a primary resource in planning and high level feasibility evaluations for future products. It is also responsible for the ensuring the maintenance of our mechanical tooling, mechanical fixtures, mechanical setup tools, and mechanical adjustment processes. This position is also responsible aiding management in the implementation, monitoring and management of new product development and sustaining engineering projects.

Key Duties / Responsibilities

Responsible for the design/specification, implementation, and unit testing of the mechanical components of document scanners and stackers including metal and plastic parts, mounting hardware, rollers, sprockets, belts, bearings, etc.
Responsible for the design of any manufacturing tooling and adjustment processes required to assemble scanners and stackers from the designed/purchased components.
Responsible for maintaining all drawings related to the mechanical components including dimensions, tolerances, finish specifications, material specifications or any other special requirements.
Design new scanner and stacker components or improvements/extensions to existing scanners and stackers including paper feed mechanisms, sheet deflectors, sheet separation components, cable and sensor mounting, and skins.
Work with outside vendors to have components prototyped, test prototype components, resolve vendor questions and issues, and create final specifications.
Work with the manufacturing engineer to create processes including adjustment procedures to ensure consistent and the quickest possible assembly of the mechanical and electro-mechanical components.
Work with manufacturing to ensure the continuing quality and manufacturability of all scanner and stacker designs including creating processes, fixtures or tooling to assist in the manufacture, and replacing obsolete components
Work with outside vendor to design and test packaging against industry standards for all scanners and stackers including new design when shipping damage trends are realized.
Work with internal and external customers including Scantron HTS Support and Field Technicians to trouble shoot and resolve any customer problems.
Determine trends in manufacturing or customer problems and taking proactive steps to reduce the occurrence and severity of these problems
Lead and participate in the review and development of organizational goals to ensure strategic linkage to company objectives.
Lead and participate in new product evaluation, feasibility studies, and brainstorming
Identify opportunities for product and process improvements and innovative solutions.

Education Requirements

Requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience

Experience / Skills / Ability Requirements

Minimum three years of hands-on experience in all phases of complex mechanical and electro-mechanical design
Experience with 3D CAD mechanical design software, preferably using Creo 2.0 or later.
Experience with mechanical handling of paper, flexible materials or webs is preferred.
Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to exercise mature judgment
Strong written and verbal communications skills
Must be results oriented, with the ability to break down complex projects into logical/manageable pieces
Experience with and broad knowledge of metal, plastic, coating, glass, paint, and rubber materials including characteristics and usage
Experience supporting a manufacturing environment
Experience with packaging methods and testing standards is preferred
Experience with direct customer support is preferred
Demonstrated ability to work well with internal teams, clients, contractors, and vendors, maintaining a positive and collaborative work environment
Flexibility and adaptability necessary to thrive in an innovative, fast- paced environment with shifting priorities.
