Job Description

Overall scope of Industrial Designer position:

  • Passion for effective products within the housewares industry and appreciation for the consumer we are reaching; working to provide highly functional and affordable storage and organization products to the masses
  • Translate broad ideas into workable sketches, concept new product designs from unlikely places, provide current product design solutions, understand detail importance, not be bound by process yet work with urgency
  • Design product from concept to delivery (basic to innovative formats), including private label and in-line
  • Interact daily with product, purchasing, sourcing and sales teams in both the US and Asia
  • Fluent in Photoshop and Illustrator, proficiency in 3D computer modeling, collaborative, constructive approach to design, mock-up and prototyping experience with test-fail-design-test mentality

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Product Managers to create next generation product to meet the needs of retailers and the marketplace in assigned categories.
  • Research the industry (internal and external) to identify trends and be inspired for new concepts though store visits, trade shows, online, new manufacturing capabilities, etc.
  • Collect images across categories, demographics, formats and industries for inspiration.
  • Identity new categories to complement existing HCD and Zevro assortments.
  • Develop trend boards by season for the following categories:
  • Color
  • Materials
  • Patterns
  • Texture
  • Shape
  • Review trends with PM’s to determine product direction based on trend analysis, sales data, customer direction/feedback and industry outlook.
  • Concept ideation: Initial pencil sketches developed and reviewed with team for feedback and revisions.
  • Refined concept: Tighten up drawings that were selected; add specs and dimensions for quoting with factories.
  • Optional step : Final renderings if needed for retailer presentations; tight drawings with color, material selections, feature call-outs and overall dimensions.
  • Revise drawings based on:
  • Sample review
  • Pricing
  • Customer feedback
  • Work cross functionally with the Graphics Team on packaging, merchandising, graphics, corporate branding (PPT template, letterhead, collateral).
  • Communicate with Shanghai team to clarify product specs and answer technical questions on drawings or product intent.
  • Attend customer meetings to support and explain trends, design, innovation and NPD.
  • Support Business Development on channel specific projects: Product and merchandising renderings (new packaging, pallet displays, endcaps).
  • Implement product design and specification packet standard for HCD.
  • Maintain project list and timeline to ensure deliverables are being tracked and met.


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5-7 years of industrial design experience in hard goods
  • Experience in the retail industry with consumer packaged goods products is ideal
  • Advanced proficiency in Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to complete multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment
  • Professional verbal and written communication abilities
  • Creative problem solver with initiative needed to suggest and complete projects in new ways
  • Pays attention to details with a consistent sense of urgency
