General Summary

The Mechanical Design Engineer III will, will, under general supervision, design, fabricate, and test components for mechatronic devices.

Principal Responsibilities

The Mechanical Design Engineer III will:

Participates within a research team to design and develop mechatronic prosthetic limbs.
Assists with performing engineering analysis, such finite element modeling as needed in device development.
Performs engineering analysis, such finite element modeling as needed in device development.
Designs mechanisms, electromechanical systems, implantable devices, and related components to meet required performance targets and safety factors.
Manages medium-sized projects (development of complete devices or major subsystems of complicated devices). Concurrently manages multiple projects. Is able to serve as team leader for projects.
Works with out-sourced vendors to acquire custom-made components, and ensure appropriate design specifications and tolerances in fabricated prototypes.
Works with electrical engineering team to integrate electronic and mechanical designs into a robust, operational device.
Creates CAD models and drawings of complexity commensurate with experience; interacts with appropriate manufacturers and machine companies; and assembles and debugs components.
Assists with testing components and creating models to suggest future improvements.
Mentors and coaches lower level engineers in in best technical practices.
Participates in maintaining a safe work environment through adherence to policies and procedures relative to safety, fire prevention, hazard communications, security, equipment use and maintenance, infection control and vehicle safety.
Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the organization.
Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to Jim Lipsey, Engineering Manager—Mechatronics Team.

Job Requirements
A professional level of knowledge in engineering technology generally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and programming software (Matlab preferred) for analysis purposes. Expertise commensurate with experience.
Ability to design, fabricate, and program test systems to validate design performance, with proficiency commensurate with experience.
Ability to work independently and structure time to meet deadlines, in addition to being flexible to changing design requirements and deliverables.
Ability to work with hand tools, electronics tools, and machine tools to fabricate, adjust, modify, and repair devices necessary.
Good communication skills in both written and verbal forms. Able to work well with research subjects in a clinical setting.
Minimum of 5 years of related experience as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of area of specialization.
Able to work receiving little instruction on day-to-day work, but general instructions on new assignments.
Able to resolve a wide range of issues in creative ways where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Able to network with senior internal and external personnel in own area of expertise.
Working Conditions

Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
