The Designer I/II/Senior reports to the Supplier Air Respirator Product Engineering Manager and is primarily responsible for producing Computer Aided Design (CAD) models and detailed drawings to support new product development activities that meet or exceed customer requirements while fulfilling product cost, project cost, and project schedule requirements.


  • Participate on cross-functional project teams to develop innovative MSA respiratory protection products through the application of MSA’s New Product Development (NPD) process.
  • Develop, evaluate, and select product concepts that meet or exceed customer and regulatory requirements and address design for manufacture and design for assembly requirements.
  • Create sketches, Computer Aided Design (CAD) models, and prototypes to facilitate product concept generation, evaluation, and selection activities.
  • Create robust CAD part and assembly models for a range of supplied air respirator and air purifying respirator systems and components including but not limited to: facepieces, pneumatic valves, pneumatic regulators, filters, carriers, harnesses, and mechanical enclosures for assorted electronics assemblies.
  • Apply knowledge of customer applications, regulatory requirements, manufacturing methods, and materials to develop product designs that are sound and technically feasible.
  • Apply tolerance analysis, interference detection, collision detection, and simulation tools to evaluate and optimize product designs.
  • Create detailed CAD part and assembly drawings that support manufacturing and sourcing documentation needs in accordance with industry and MSA drawing standards. Apply knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), manufacturing methods, and materials to appropriately and comprehensively layout drawing views and specify dimensions, tolerances, fits, surfaces finishes, and annotations.
  • Create exploded view and line art drawings that support customer facing documentation needs including user instructions, parts lists, and repair and service instructions.
  • Facilitate engineering documentation new requests, new releases, and change requests in a timely manner and in accordance with MSA documentation control processes.
  • Convert or recreate legacy CAD part and assembly models to facilitate design maintenance and design reuse efforts.




  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with SOLIDWORKS CAD software in the creation of part models, assembly models, and detailed drawings.
  • Demonstrated innovation and creativity with regard to engineering design.
  • Excellent computer skills, all common Windows software programs.
  • Excellent communication skills, all forms from verbal to computer software.
  • Excellent teamwork skills to interface with engineering, operations, sourcing, and vendors.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a customer-based perspective.
  • Excellent work ethic and the ability to work independently.
  • Maximum 10% domestic/international travel required



  • Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP) certification.
  • Certified SOLIDWORKS Expert (CSWE) certification including Surfacing, Sheet Metal, Mold Tools, and Drawing Tools.
  • Demonstrated experience using SOLIDWORKS to create complex geometry utilizing advance surfacing methods.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with PTC Pro/Engineer CREO CAD software.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the ASME Y-14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing standard.
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing training and certification.
  • Demonstrated experience with SAP enterprise management software.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes including but not limited to: plastic injection molding, rubber molding, machining, metal forging, sheet metal fabrication, soft/sewn goods fabrication.
  • Familiarity with plastic injection mold design.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping processes and materials.
  • Familiarity with electro-mechanical documentation requirements and best practices.


Education and experience required:

  • Associates degree in Drafting or Computer Aided Design/equivalent or two years of technical school degree with emphasis on math, science or computer technology.
  • Minimum 1 year experience as a designer for the Designer I level position.
  • Minimum 3 years experience as a designer for the Designer II level position.
  • Minimum 5 years experience as a designer for the Senior Designer level position.
